Research for Final Idea

Five Key questions-
Who said the world will end on the 21st of December 2012?
The Mayans calender ends on the 21/12/12 making people think that the world will end on this day as Mayans were known as precise accurate people who provided information which was true. The people who said the world will end are people who are religious for example some Christians say in the bible that satan will come on this day and the world will be ruled by him. And then they say Jesus will also come back to Earth were there will be a war.
There are multiple story's about how the world may end but the story which they talk about is the Mayan calender. The Mayan calender has been running for 5000 years and on the calender it ends on the 21st December 2012. This has led people to believe that the world will end on this day and there is no way of saving it. Also the Mayans were also good mathematics  good time keepers and astronomers. It was impressive as they did not have technology back in that time. They knew equinoxes, solstices, phases of the moon such as eclipses.
But other sites such as NASA say that this theory is not true and that the world will not end but will continue like every other day.

What they claim will happen on this day?
Different people claim different things on what they think will happen on this day. One of the story's which they claim will happen is plant Nibiru (a.k.a planet x) is coming at earth and will cause a massive wipe out to civilization  similar to what happened to the dinosaurs being extinct. This is highly unlikly to happen this year as it would be in newspapers or on the news around the world, also NASA say that it was meant to hit Earth before but never happened so the date got changed because of the Mayan calender.

The Mayans say that we will have 3 days of darkness as there will be a eclipse which only lasts 8 minutes but it will be 3 days. They say that the pyramids will be lined up with multiple planets and that the sun will be projecting a some sort of energy which will give us more energy than usual and this is meant to happen for 8 minutes.

In this video it explains more about the Mayans theory of what will happen on this day

http://beforeitsnews.com/beyond-science/2012/12/the-event-everyone-worldwide-will-soon-know-the-importance-of-december-21-2012-2440146.html

Where they claim this will this happen?
They claim this will obviously happen everywhere on Earth as they say the world will end on this day meaning every area will be affected. They don't state where it will happen first as no one knows this information, which is a reason for it not being true. But in my opinion if there were something to happen, it would be either the North or South pole as these are the most important places on Earth as they are the magnetic fields and also ice caps melting so this is the most effective place. Same goes for the world experiencing 3 days of darkness, it will happen everywhere if it were to happen and but would occur in a specific country which has sun rise first and is the time zone ahead of other country's.

Why they claim the world will end on this day?
They claim the world will end on this day due to the Mayan calender ending on the 21/12/12. The Mayans were known for predicting future events which had come true, also they had their own calender which others followed and because the calender stops on this date, people believe this to be the end of the world and no more civilization. But in the link above 'Mayan explains 21/12/12' explains what they claim will happen on this day and state that the world will not end. But why they claim the world will end is because of the Mayan calender ends on this day and people believe this because Mayans were precise accurate people and gave most information which was not false such as eclipses and other natural world events.

http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/mayan.html

Do they believe it is to do with religion or Science?
They believe it is to do with religion and science as Mayans didn't create the calender but was used by pre-Columbian central americans and also the Mayans, but Mayans were also great Mathematics were great at finding out information about the world without using technology. So it is more to do with science and calculation as the Mayans could calculate these eclipses by studying the stars and planets and they also have a theory on what will happen on this day through pyramids which were created.

But science also shows (NASA) that the world will not end on this day as there are many facts which means nothing will happen. For example Planet Nibiru was meant to hit Earth on May 2003 and this did not obviously occur as we would all be dead by now so they moved the date to 21/12/12, the day the Mayan calender ends. They also talk about how the world will not be in total blackout on this day and that they are false accusations. Below is a link to a video describing more about the Blackout.

Documenting Documentaries

Bill Nicholls theory is that there are 5 types of Documentaries categories which are:
  • Expository
  • Observational
  • Interactive
  • Reflexive
  • Performative
These five categories are attempts by documentary film makers to represent the truth.

Expository mode- Expository mode often has a narrator telling the story of the documentary who we don't see. These types of documentary give facts based on the narrator, so they have to emphasize verbally to make the documentary more interesting and more factual. In this documentary they have a narrator as penguins can't tell us what is going on, so the narrator adds to it as he tells the audience of what is going on.
The film maker has kept to Expository mode by including a narrator who describes in detail of what is going on and provides 'right' and 'proper' answers. We hear the narrator voice throughout the documentary. The documentary makes use of dramatization by adding music in interesting parts for example at the beginning of the video, there is background music to make the scene seem more dramatic and also gives the sense of how you should feel about it such as if it is a action scene they would add an up-beat fast song.
Also in this documentary the documentary maker makes it dramatic by adding CGI and some cliff hangers throughout the documentary. For example in the documentary there is a scene where a sea-lion is hunting a group of penguins and because it is CGI, they can make it look over dramatic so it is more interesting to watch.
They add realism in the documentary by using actual footage of penguins over a long period of time for, we see this in the documentary as it shows the progress of raising an egg and this has to be filmed all the way through as this only happens a few times a year.

The documentary is aimed to be truth and insightful as they show actual footage of the situations happening, although this documentary has to shot live as they cannot control penguins and tell them what to do. But like some documentaries they re-act what happened which may show that it maybe untrue or it is a documentary which has been made up.

Observational Mode- Observation mode this mode is came about in the late 1950's to the early 1960, observational mode is an attempt to capture what is going on in the moment and the filmmaker is involved as they follow every step of the object/person they are filming. This mode is known for the filmmaker to be capturing all the action and having an amateur looking footage to show the footage was shot live.
What the documentary maker is trying to achieve by using this mode is to show us the documentary from their perspective. The filmmaker keeps up with the action using a handheld camera as it is not scripted and which creates a amateur shaky look. It would not be possible to set up a tripod as it would take to long and to also carry it around.

The example I have chosen is Banksy's exit through the gift shop which is about how street art (graffiti) came about and about a film-man  who is fascinated with street art and films it. It also goes into how Banksy came about and how is street art has made a name for him.
The documentary uses realism as it shows real footage and of him following action of people being chased by police as they are vandalizing the area. This shows that it is real as it does not cut and there is no editing in these scenes which shows it is also not scripted.

Participatory Mode-
Participatory mode is more of the opposite of Observational mode, as the film maker becomes apart of the events which are being recorded. Here we see the film maker involved in the action, for example the Documentary Cat Fish directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman is a documentary about a photographer who posts one of his pictures to a newspaper and soon he got a painting of his picture from a girl who painted it for him. He soon became friends with her and her family through the internet and soon became suspicious about the girls older sister. He later finds out that the person painting these pictures was the girls mother and he had been lied to and also had a fake virtual relationship with a girl he thought he knew which was again the girls mother.
In this documentary it's focused on this one guy and partly his two best mates. The camera man (one of the best mates) is the film maker and he is involved in the subject as we see him throughout the documentary and ask questions so he is partly involved in some situations.
What the documentary maker is trying to achieve by using the Participatory mode is by them being shown in the documentary, makes them a character and apart of the story, which they are partly involved and the audience will acknowledge this and would perhaps find the documentary more interesting and truthful as the director is apart of it.

The documentary makes use of realism through the camera technique, through the whole documentary it is filmed using a handheld camera to give the sense that it is not scripted and everything happening is live. For this documentaries it is ideal they use a handheld camera as it is based on a true story, it would take to long for them to set up the right equipment and would look scripted.

The documentary is aimed to be truthful and insight on social life on the internet, as it is meant to represent how people get to know other people (or complete strangers) over the internet. In there documentary is tells the story of a man who met a family through Facebook and how he ended up in love with a girl who never existed but was made up by a woman. So the documentary is showing the audience that anyone can be disguised as someone else over social networking sites.

Reflexive Mode-
Reflexive mode is documentary's which are about the truth but not the actual truth, it talks about the subject in a truthful matter and it makes the audience aware that it has been edited. The example I have chosen is Louis Theroux Miami mega jail which is about Louis Theroux visiting the Jail and getting criminals there point of view on what they think of the subject. Here we see it from different people in the Miami jail and they tell us why they are in there,
What the documentary maker is trying to achieve using this method is to show the audience the truth or on what they think the truth is. They do this by showing interviews and also with facts. In this documentary they show the truth by interviewing the officers on duty, prisoners and also Louis Theroux gives his point of view.

Performative Mode-
Performative mode is a documentary which focuses on one subject is made to make the audience think that they are right and for you to be on their side. These documentaries are aimed at something and only cover one side of the subject as they may be particularly biased. The documentary maker is trying to make the audience feel more emotional about the subject by emphasizing the subject and going into more depth and using evidence to back up their point.
The example I have chosen is Bowling for Columbine directed by Micheal Moore is about the columbine school shooting and goes over how easy it was to purchase guns and ammunition at a young age. Also in the documentary is shows what people think about guns in America and how it is apart of their everyday lives.
What the documentary maker is trying to achieve by using this mode is to show the audience one side, and make them believe what you want them to. In the documentary at the start the director interviews people in America who own a gun and them explaining how it is useful in life. But the documentary later goes on to the Columbine shooting which makes us think that people not all people who own guns are responsible and can't be trusted making us think people should not have access to guns.
The documentary uses realism by adding interviews which we see a lot of during the documentary and there is also archive footage of the columbine shooting caught on CCTV, and we also here the phone call of students, teachers and parents to the police which happened on the day.

News Package Convention

News packages is a single specific story, the presenter anchors the audience by using a variety of conventions with in the self-contained taped news report. These conventions are:

  • The Field Reporter
  • Links to studio
  • Mode of Address to Viewer
  • Interviewing Experts a Witnesses
  • Report Structure
  • Actuality Footage
These conventions are used in News packages to keep the audience drawn in and to make the news report more interesting to watch.

The News Report I am using to show these conventions is a 9/11 report by NBC news. This report is about a terrorist attack on the world trade center on September 9th 2001. I have chosen this news report as it is live, the situation is rare and the world trade center is a famous icon which the world knows about and it contains all the conventions above.

Field Reporter
The field reporter is the person who is reporting at the location. They are sending the information back to the studio or it may be a pre-recorded report which shows the reporter reporting earlier in the day. They dress smart formal depending on the location for example if the location they are reporting from has harsh weather conditions, then they would be dressed appropriately for that. But all presenters were suits to look formal. Some presenters are involved in the situation, like they are in a flood which is affecting them from getting to the ground or they may be in the flood reporting.
The stereotype of a news reporter is predominantly male who are well educated and also quite posh. Most presenters are also experts in their fields so they know more about the situation. Also news reports contain graphics for field reporters showing the audience the name of the person reporting.

Here we can see the field reporter is reporting at the scene where the situation is happening. He is reporting at the location but is not close to the situation as it is too dangerous to go near. The reporter is dressed smart wearing a suit which makes him look more professional and also the news report. The reporter is not involved in the situation as he is standing away from it but has the shot of the event behind him so the audience can still see what is happening. The reporter fits the stereotype as he is male, looks smart and the ethnicity for most presenters is white american (depends on location or news channel) and this presenter is.
As you can see in the image above it also has the reporters name which tells us who he is and people may know him after in other reports from his name.

Links to Studio
Links to studio is if the presenter is talking to the reporter at the actual location. This is mainly how live news reporters are introduced with the presenter in the studio introduces the reporter by saying "we are going live to". Also the location has to be safe for the reporter as he is reporting live and is talking back to the studio. There is no editing or package as there is no time to put it together and make cuts as it is live.

In this image we clearly see the presenter talking to the reporter from the studio. We this is live as there are two screens showing the presenter and his location, and the reporter and where he is located, it is live as they talk to each other. These may be delayed as the connection could be far.
Here in the image the location is safe as their appears to be nothing happening. Also their is no package as it is live but their is a lot of graphics used such as the logo of the news, the reporter, the report title and live feeds at the bottom.

Mode of address to viewer
The mode of address to viewer is about the reporters mode of address and how they come across to the viewer. Most reporters for news reports are posh and well spoken as they have to be clear so the audience can understand them. Also the tone of the reporter is important as it tells the audience the importance of the situation. So if the reporters tone is deep and clear it means its serious and if the reporter is smiling and laughing then the tone is not as serious. Also the reporter is an analysis expert so they give an analysis of the situation and also their opinion on what they think.
They deliver information and report on whats going on, so they are the fact providers telling the audience the facts.

The reporter in this news report comes across as a well spoken reporter, he is easy to understand and is not speaking to complex. His tone is serious as he sounds deep and sounds very clear which tells the audience he is serious. He is an analysis expert as he gives a report of what is going on around him.

Interviewing and Witnesses
Interviewing and witnesses are the people who are being interview and other people who are witnesses to the subject the news report is about. These are important and interesting for the audience to watch as witnesses make it and tell is from their point of view. The location it is shot at shows the status of the person being interview or the witnesses. The graphics used are the same as the reports as it shows the name of the witness, interviewer.

In this Interview the reporter is reporting about the new release on air Jordan's  He is interviewing two witnesses who were in the queue and have a pair. They talk about the situation from their point of view and tell the audience what the reporter can't as they were present at the time.

Report Structure
Report structure is how the report is set up and how it will be presented. Sign in is when the presenter introduces the story and then cuts to the reporter. The context for a report structure is how the story is set up. Also in report structures they plan were archive footage is placed, archive footage is old footage. In the report structure the also have fact communication, which is how they put out the fact and how they make it come across to the viewer. Also the location is it being reported from and is it outside the broadcast studio.

In this report the structure is same to any other report. The report has the presenter introduce the story and then passes it on to the presenter. They show footage which was pre-recorded before when the event was happening. It includes an interview with witnesses or people who were involved, and they use piece to camera with the reporter who is talking into the camera to the presenter and audience.

Actuality Footage
Actuality footage is a type of archive footage but is not footage which is filmed, it is amateur footage which is filmed on camera, video or mobile). It provides a different view which is not as professional as a normal camera  they have tripods and other equipment set up.  But it is used as the camera crew for news channels may not be able to get their in time or don't have time to set up. In news reports they tend not to use a big amount of actuality footage as it is not very professional but it depends on how important the news is and how important the footage is.

The video above is a news report about the Colorado shooting, this contains actuality footage which was recorded by a mobile phone. We see people fleeing from the cinema after the shooting and this gives a reaction to the viewers watching on how people were feeling at the time. Film crew would have taken to long to set up and would not have captured this moment.
In the news report they use the footage for very long as its not professional and does not look as serious but it shows the audience what happened.

Subgenres of Factual Programming

Docu Drama-
Docu Drama is a type of television program or film which is re-acted to represent an event. Docu Drama are slightly dramatic to make the Program/film better and more interesting to watch. What I like most about Docu Drama's is it is interesting to see how they have reacted it as there are many film today which have been reacted to represent a past event such as Titanic but it is also dramatized to keep the audience engaged.
Docu Dramas do not have presenters as it is a drama re-in acting an event also there is no narrator telling the story. These programs are based on real events but are not entirely accurate, as some may have extra scenes to make the program more entertaining.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUD5VZD_bY8&oref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fresults%3Fsearch_query%3Dthe%2Bgovernment%2Binspector%26oq%3Dthe%2Bgovernment%2Bins%26gs_l%3Dyoutube.3.0.0l8.1438.6500.0.8047.18.11.0.7.7.0.47.361.11.11.0...0.0...1ac.1.yovtGKoQkcw&has_verified=1

Docu Soap
Docu Soap is a television documentary series in which the lives of the people filmed are presented as entertainment or drama. During shows they usually have multiple story lines between each person to keep the show interesting and entertaining. These story lines may link to the next weeks show which a montage at the end may show, and this makes the audience want to find out what happens next.
There tends to be a lot of drama involved again to make it more interesting and also entertaining.
In Docu Soaps they have different characters with different personality so it makes the story line of the show more interesting. For example in Runs House, the people in the show all have different characters which makes the show different and more entertaining to watch.
The example I have chosen is Miami ink. Miami ink is a program about a famous tattoo shop in the heart of Miami  each episode is generally the same with customers getting a tattoo which means something to them and them getting all emotional about it. They also focus on the tattoo artists and there life and friendship with the other tattoo artists.
It is a popular Docu soap as a few celebrity's appear on the program getting a tattoo, and are also interviewed about the tattoo they are getting and why they are getting it.
In this program we see at the end of the episode, a montage of next weeks show giving us a glimpse of what is going to happen, like a cliff hanger which makes the audience want to know what happens next.

Infotainment
Infotainment are programs which are factual but are also entertaining to watch, and may be a bit comical. As factual programs are not the most popular types of programs/documentaries, they make it more entertaining to watch to increase the popularity of the show and increase the viewings. Although it is factual and is based on a specific topic, they tend to move away from the subject and include small topics which may be related to the main topic.
Infotainment shows have presenters who can anchor the audience and keep them interested, meaning the presenters have to be entertaining and must know about the topic they are about, being an expert in that field.
Also it comes across as entertainment and factual, so the shows are entertaining to watch but they also give information and are factual.

The example I have chosen is Soccer AM, soccer AM is a  program broadcast-ed on Saturday mornings with two presenters talking about football and the latest news. Soccer AM also includes games, quiz's and has guests which appear during the show such as footballers, singers etc. To increase the popularity of the show they have different guests appear each week and singers are not related to football, but they appear on the show to attract a different type of audience and to increase the viewings.
They keep the audience anchored into the show by speaking directly into the camera and talking to the audience as if they are apart of the show.
In Top Gear they have three different presenters who have completely different personality's and characters, they are all entertaining in their own way and keep the show interesting but they are also experts in the field of the subject as they go into depth about the subject they are talking about.

Reality TV
Reality TV shows involve real people who are filmed about situations, and may contain a presenter depending on the show. Reality TV shows are programs/documentaries filmed on real events of real people and show it from their point of view. Reality TV shows are edited as it is too long to show, the director films for a period of days and edits all the days into one episode as some parts being recorded are unnecessary. Also Reality TV shows have started to cast celebrity's as it would be popular to watch, entertaining but also may be scripted to make it more entertaining.

The example I have chosen is Extreme Makeover, this show is about a family getting the house re-done and modernized to make their lives better as there may have been a disaster in their life. In the show they have a presenter who is also an expert in D.I.Y, and they also show a bit of background about the family to show the audience what tough time they are going through.
In this show we see footage of multiple days edited into one show as they show would be too long to watch, we see this as the graphics show what day it is and how much time they have left.
Also they have some surprise celebrity's to come on the program and help out, which raises the views for the show, for example they had usher appear.

DC Opening.PNG

Educational Television
Educational shows are programs which provide factual information aswell as educational information. The purpose of these programs is to educate the audience, there are two types of educational TV in the sense of style, one being very factual and based only facts and education and the second type is learning through actors and in different scenarios, them acting out a situation and making it educational by providing the facts which is more entertaining.

The program I have chosen is Horrible Histories, Horrible Histories is a program based on history but the more gruesome side which is more specific as it focuses on a sub-genre of history. Horrible History's includes a presenter which is a puppet rat (related to the topic as there were many rats before) which is different, and the program is educational through actors e.g. A person acting as King Henry and singing about his 9 wives, here we are educated about how King Henry had 9 wives.
Also it is more entertaining to watch rather than someone telling you the information.

Wildlife documentary
Wildlife programs focus on animals in the wilderness, concentrating on animals in the wild and in their habitat. These programs are popular as they give us an insight on how animals live in the wild, how they hunt, sleep etc. We see handheld footage to give the effect that we are there and also a establishing shots to make it look professional. As animals can't speak apart from parrots, there is a voice over to tell us what is going on like a narrator.

The program I have chosen is Planet Earth which is a wildlife documentary narrated by David Attenborough. What I find interesting about this documentary is the type of shots they capture and the story's they tell with it, which I find interesting. What makes it interesting is the narrator, if they sound interesting and they sound like they know what they are talking about it doesn't make it boring, as he is an expert in that field it makes it believable.
It includes footage in the wild which we can't see usually as it is dangerous in the wild, and in planet Earth they show a lot of footage in the wild such as amateur camera, the camera man using a handheld camera and not using a tripod as the action is taking place and their is not enough time to set up the equipment.

Make Over show
Make Over shows are programs about real people making a change in their life due to a problem they suffer. Make over shows have presenters which are experts in their fields as they are the ones who are changing the person and helping them change. The presenter is usually a person who tells the audience the situation and also the expert giving the advice.
Also make over shows have presenters who are not bossy but calm and positive as the people on the show need a positive boost to change.

The show I have chosen which is a Make Over show is MTV Made. This program is about ordinary people who want to make a change in their life or want to be something they always wanted to be such as people wanting to loose weight, someone learning to become a break dancer, weightlifter, mountain biker etc. The people involved are aged around 16-20, in each episode there is someone different presenting but also mentoring and training the person who wants to make the change. These people are the experts which is the reason why they change the person presenting the program.
Also in the show they have some presenters who are positive and calm, but they also have bossy presenters as a lot of the people on the show try to do something they want and they need to be pushed. But other shows like super size vs supper skinny has presenters who are calm and positive to make the people feel more comfortable and not make them feel to bad about themselves.

Review show
Review shows include the presenters testing out the products and giving the opinion and view of the product, also shows the product in action possibly with the presenter giving a voice over over it. Review shows normally have more than one presenter because they tend to analysis a bunch of products or certain subjects which would be hard for one presenter to do. Also these presenters have to be experts in their fields as they are the ones reviewing the products and therefore must know about it.
They are usually set in a studio but also go off screen such as pre-recorded footage or filming outside the studio.

The program I have chosen as my example is the Gadget show, the gadget show is a program about all the latest gadgets and the presenters testing them out and using them in various challenges to test how good it is. What this show does is it reviews the products on the show, tells you the advantages and disadvantage of the product being tested, tells you the price and where you could purchase the product and also gives you a rating telling you how good the product is.In review shows the presenter has to be the presenter and the expert, their are currently four presenters in the Gadget show which are experts in different fields of gadgets for example Jason Bradbury is an expert in gaming/handheld devices and computers, and Jon Bentley is an expert in cameras and photography as we see him in shows analyzing these products.
Also in the gadget show they use a lot of pre-recorded footage which they have done before the show which is edited which they piece together to make the meaning. About 70% of the show is the pre-recorded footage and 30% of the show is the studio where the presenters talk about the pre-recorded footage.

Chat Show
Chat shows are programs about people who discuss everyday problems or problems they are having. These shows particularly have presenters who are one sided and stick to one persons side. Chat shows are based in studios with a live audience which gives there reaction to people who appear on the show, also gives the audience at home the reaction they should have.
The audience is also working class as they can relate more to these topics and also get to be apart of the show by saying the word to the people on stage.
The program I have chosen as my example is The Jerry Springer Show, this show is about a presenter who has real people as guests which have problems with someone e.g. their boyfriend because he slept with his girlfriends neighbor. On this show the presenter is paricually one side and sticks up for one person and doesn't give the other person a chance. Chat shows are made to be entertaining and also be a bit over the top on some situations.
They also have follow up shows showing what will happen on next weeks show, this gives the audience an in-sight on what is to come and makes them want to know what happens next. Also they do this during the break to keep audiences tuned in.

Magazine show
Magazine shows are programs about news and multiple things which are going on which are to do with whats going on around the world. The programs are shot close to date as information has to be up to date and mainly focuses on a specific topic.
Magazine shows also have about one to two presenters, also they may have a guest on the show to increase popularity for the show and also have experts as guests to discuss a certain topic.
The example I have chosen is Day Break which is based on news and things going on around the world. They have guests which come on the show and are interviewed and also have experts to talk about the main topic.
This show is broadcast ed every morning Monday to Saturday giving the latest news and is shot close to date so the information is correct and is still factual.

Factual Programs

Factual Programs is non-fictional program which give factual information to the viewer. Most Factual programs are Documentary's which are programs based on a particular subject such as Animals surviving in the jungle and the program would contain footage and a voice over narrating.

Ross Kemp On Gangs
The first example is Ross Kemp On Gangs. This is a factual program as it gives information about gangs and how they live. In the episodes we see Ross Kemp visiting different locations such as America, Jamaica, Brasil and entering gang territory and talking to gang members and others who are effected by gang violence. In each episode we see Ross Kemp in an interview with the gang leader. This show provides information about gang life and why gangs are formed.

Also the style of the program is fast in places such as when there is a shooting or a situation occurs, so it has fast cuts to keep the audience entertained as documentaries are known to be slow and boring from the lack of presentation style.

What I like about this program is we get an insight on gangs and how they live, what they go through and see what life is like for them.

Top Gear
My second example is Top Gear. Top Gear is about all the latest and upcoming cars. Famous for it's challenges such as turning a car into a boat and sailing over the channel. Top Gear is a factual program as it gives information about cars and also they test drive them giving the audience a visual demonstration of how the car is.
What I like about Top Gear is mainly the challenges set each episode, the reason why is because there is always humor, the cars are different and also problems occur which is entertaining.
Also what use to be good was the 'Cool Wall', also what I like about Top Gear is the hot lap set by the stig at the end of the show. What I enjoy about this is there is a leader board for the cars and each week a different car is tested around the track. It's fastest lap goes on the leader-boards and it is ranked in order of speed.

Apprentice
The Apprentice is about contestants fighting to become Alan Sugars apprentice. Each week there is a different task and the contestants have to work in teams to win the task as by the end of the task, the losing team will have someone fired.
What I like about the Apprentice is how competitive contestants are which makes it interesting. Also the tasks each week are interesting to watch as we can see which contestants can handle the pressure.

Secret Millionaire
Secret Millionaire is about a Millionaire going undercover as a person in need of a job and works with people who are in need of money as they are in problems. The secret millionaire donates money to people who are in need and to pick themselves up as they deserve it.

What I like about this program is it helps people out and you get to see people earning what they deserve. I also like the fact that the people think they are being filmed for an entirely different reason but find out in the end that they get money to help them and there reaction changes.

Undercover Boss
Undercover Boss is about a boss of a company going undercover in his/her own business and investigating the business from a different perspective. The Boss works closely with a few of the employees and by the end judging on how hard they work, they reward them with a gift or promotion.

What I like about this show is is some episodes there are people not doing there job properly and the boss himself can't do anything until the end as he/she blow their cover. Also it shows that people get what they deserve for how hard they work.
I also like at the end the employee's reaction to when they meet the boss and how they realize that they were working with them.

Planet Earth
Planet earth is about animals around the world which we don't see often such as elephants, penguins, lions in the wild etc. The style of the show is not very fast but has quite slow cuts between each scenes. There are a few cuts for example when the predator is hunting the prey.

What I like about this is we get an insight of what happens in the wildlife and also we see it from a great point of view. Also we see how animals around the world survive and how they live. What I don't like about some of it is it can be slow.

Airport
The airport shows us what goes on in the airport and what different situations occur. What I like about this show is there are many situations between the staff and people flying as sometimes someones flight is delayed, their ticket is not valid..... It's also entertaining and can be humorous.

Frozen Planet
Frozen planet is a documentary about the cold side of earth, the Arctic and Antarctic. What I like and find interesting about this program is it is very factual and gives a lot of information about what is going on in these areas. It talks about how climate change affects land forms such as the ice sea.

Human Planet
Human Planet is about us human and describes the human species. It is interesting as it gives facts on the human species. What i like about this program is it talks about how humans are adapted to the world and how we survive. It is also interesting and is very factual

Gadget Show
Gadget show is all about the latest and high tech gadgets, it gives reviews and also they are set challenges which is similar to top gear. I like this program because it gives information on what to buy, for how much and also tells us what is the latest tech.
