Production Log 4

This week I have been editing my documentary and adding the transisitions, effects, titles and graphics. Once I had put together the footage I could see I was missing some scenes which looked odd. These scenes were piece to camera of me, although I had piece to camera shots, a few of clips, the sound was not recording properly because I was filming while it was windy and I did not have enough shots. I filmed this before the deadline and managed to edit on time. I submitted my work on the deadline.

I found that I did not have as much time as I had liked to edit but this was due to one of my inteviews being cancelled and this delayed my editing time as I had to find a new inteviewer. Editing I found relativley easy as I have used Final cut before when making my Me-Vid, I also found LiveType quite easy to use and I have become more familiar with this program which will be helpful in future.

What I found difficult was rushing my editing towards the end, I found the time I had wa not enough to get my documentary to what I expected it to be, this was due to the professor I was going to interview and at the last minute he decided to cancel as he did not want to be recorded.

Production Log 3

This week I have started editing and uploading my documentary, I managed to get three interviews as I had a problem with one of the interviewees who did not want to be filmed. This week I have been piecing together my footage and adding graphics in. From looking at how much footage I have recorded, I went to film a few more piece to camera shots as the documentary overall did not look right. I also arranged another interview with a Psycologist to replace the physics professor who dropped out on me. My progress is relativly good and I think I will have my documentary completed in time by the deadline.

What I found relativley easy this week was forming my documentary together. I found this easy as I had my script complete and I followed that which made it easier for me to see what i was missing. I also started to create my animation for the documentary which I am creating in Flash, this animation in a short cartoon animation showing the mayans theory of what will happen on 21/12/12. I found this easy as I have used this program before and i know how to use it.

What I found difficult this week was trying to contact the psycologist to interview for my documentary. I currently had three interviews, but I needed another expert opinion from a different view as i had a priest who could tell me from a religous view, a doomsday follower who could tell me from a personal view and a non believer who could also tell me from a personal view. So I think having another interview with a person who can give me their opinion from a different sight, this is why I chose to interview a psycologist who can give me and the audience more information.

Production log 2

This week I went out to film my presenting shots in ilford. On Friday I went to Ilford shopping mall to get the publics opinion on my topic. The questions i asked were 'Do you believe the world will end and why?' I felt I got two types of answers which some believe it would and some which didnt think it would. I also wqent to film my presenting shots in seven kings park, Ilford and my house. I also went to interview the priest who was participating in my documentary. I went and filmed in south woodford at 10.30, the location i went to film was in St Marys church where the priest is located.
I also went to film the doomsday follower who agreed to let me film him in barking. For my thrid interview, the physics professor did not want me to film him so I found a person who is against the end of the world and he gave me his view.

production log 1

This week i have been contacting my contact list for an interview. I did not film on monday or the other days which i was meant to as i was still completeing my planning. I managed to contact a priest who said yes to be interviewed. I arranged the interview at South woodford, St Marys church where he is. I managed to get this interview for saturday 2nd Febuary. I also contact a Physics professor at UCL who aggreed to be interviewed at UCL where he currently teaches and on a tuesday. The other interviewee i got was a doomsday follower who i found on UK-preppers, I set a date to meet him on the Sundat 3rd Febuary.

This week I also started to make my graphics and animation. What I found difficult was contacting people and trying to get an interview with them as I contact more than 14 people.

Budget

Analyzing the Competition- BARB

Myth-busters

Myth-busters is a science entertainment TV program on discovering myths which have not been discovered. Myth-busters have currently had 10 seasons with 231 episodes and has been running since January 23rd 2003. It began in 2003 and It is a program broadcasted on the discovery channel and is viewed around the world. This show is similar to what my documentary is about as they find out information about myths for example the video below is about the if Jack could have survived aswell as Rose from the film Titanic. The topic of the video is not related to mine but the style and the way it is presented is how I want my documentary to be portrayed and also the way they show and get information from experts is the way I will show mine. Also this documentary is a mixture or a serious tone and also being a bit comical to interest and entertain the viewers, and with my topic I don't want to be to serious as it is one which the audience know the answer to so I will make it slightly comical to keep the audience interested.

Bang goes the Theory

Bang goes the theory is a science program which shows different experiments which have not been done before. The program has around 3 million views for each episode and is broadcasted on BBC 1. Bang goes the theory was first broadcasted in July 2009 and currently has 7 series and is broadcasted at 19:30 on Tuesdays on BBC 1. This show would be similar to my documentary as my documentary, I will be showing and telling the audience about the subject I am talking about and providing facts with this information. This is similar to the shows structure as they show experiments and explain them. I believe I could match this or have higher ratings if I show my program at the same time as this is a peak time for television as most family's and people watch TV around this time as they are off work. This show is popular and is broadcasted on a mainstream program, but my show could potenially beat the viewing figures for this show as my program can be based on a variety of subjects and can appeal to a wide and variety of audiences.

BBC Natural World - David Attenborough

David Attenborough's TV show Natural World is about different parts of the world we don't know about and the animals which live in these different locations and how they live. Natural World was originally broadcasted on 10 December 1967 and is broadcasted on BBC two. Currently there is over 400 episodes and they are still running today for 40-50 minutes, it is currently also the longest show to be broadcasted on the BBC. This program is similar to my documentary as it focuses on the topic with mainly a voice-over and you don't see the presenter as much. In my documentary I won't be appearing as much as I will be doing a voice-over the content. The structure of the show is also slightly similar to mine as it is more facts and VT of the subject rather than me presenting. I believe I could match or potentially beat the viewing figures for this show as this show may be repetative over time as it is based of one subject which is different places around the world and different species. As my subject can be always changing and can be about different topics.

Proposal

My documentary will be about Dooms Day dates and why these predictions have been false, who made these dates and why. Dooms day dates began 634 BCE (Before common Era) and many have been predicted up till today but none have come true, are the future predicted dates just as false?

Aims
The aim of the documentary is to educate the audience on what dooms day are, how they came about, why none of these dates have come true, the purpose they were made and who by. I will use true information on what I have researched and will not use any false information which may lead the audience into thinking in something which is not true. I am aiming to show the audience mainly one side of the topic which is 'How dooms day dates are a way of creating a global story to get people interested and worried' and making the audience believe that end of the world dates are false.

Content
The content which will feature in my documentary will be factual information which backs my opinion aswell as the people I interview. The information I will be providing is the popular dates which had the world thinking, information about dooms day cult leaders and how they persuade others to believe in what they do such as their belief and information on why these dates were predicted but have not come true. The information which I will be including will be accurate and will tell the audience the truth, I will not use false content to trick the audience into thinking something else. Also I will have other peoples opinions from the public to experts which gives me and the audience watching more information and shapes the audiences opinion on whether to believe future dates may be true or that the dates are completely false.

Target Audience
My target audience is aged 16-24 and is mainly a British audience, the documentary topic is not a common subject which has been covered and I think it is a topic which will interest the audience as they are aware of these dates such as 21/12/12 but do not know the background information of why it is said the world was meant to end. It will appeal both to male and female as it is about the world we are living in, I also think it may potentially offend someone who believes in this based on their religion but I am not looking to portray certain religions in a negative way and will not include information about their belief on the topic.

Format
The format I am doing for my documentary is Participatory and a bit of Expository mode. It will be partly Participatory as I will be the presenter and will be involved in the documentary throughout in cutaways, interviews and parts of the VT but I also will have an Expository format as I will have VT's which I will voice over and providing a lot of facts which requires me to also voice over to keep the documentary interesting.

Genre
The genre is a documentary as it will be factual and provide true information and will support two sides. Also it will include archive, pre-recorded footage with interviews like a documentary. My documentary will be in the style of other documentary in camera style and structure.

Style
The style of my documentary will have a variety of vox pops, interviews, VT's etc which will keep my documentary interesting. These are used in documentary's to split the topic up into sections rather than talking about the subject in a e.g. piece to camera. Also the camera style I will be doing will vary as for my interviews I will have:

  • Close Ups- To show facial expression of either me or the interviewee when one person is speaking. I won't use this shot as often as this only gives facial expression and not body language.
  • Mid-shots- To show body language and facial expression. This will be the main shot which gives more.
  • Establishing Shot- To show both me and the interviewee. I will only use this shot once in the beginning so the audience get an understanding on the background (location) which may interest them.
